Hello, Assalammualaikum.
This post is long overdue. I've been planning to type this out since forever.
Before I got into IUKL, I've searched up many posts like this because I was hella nervous, haha. So here's a little bit of my experience that I'd like to share during the Induction Week, in hopes that you'll be excited with what's to come or will be a little help in knowing what to expect once you get here, if you're enrolling in IUKL this year or even better, this upcoming March. :D
As a little note, this post isn't sponsored or anything, haha. Okay.
First of all, what's Induction Week? It's actually Orientation Week, like the usual ones, yknow. For example, Minggu Destini Siswa for UITM, etc. This is the week where you'll be introduced with a lot of things regarding the university: the campus grounds, how to get to class, know some of your lecturers, and even register your first few subjects. Also some friends along the way.
It might sound overwhelming at first, but I assure you, the facilitators will try their best to assist you and before you know it, the three days of the Induction Week will be over! Yeap, it's only for three days so rest assured. Induction Week is not compulsory, but I'm encouraging you to go because... you actually paid for stuff so why not make the most of your money? Haha. Free food, too!
Sorry for the long muqaddimah hahaha. Okay, on to the real experience.
Day One: This is your registration day! Congratulations and all the best!
If you're living somewhere far and you're not used to the roads and highways here in Selangor, pick an earlier time to go. But if I'm not mistaken, the registration time lasts until about 3pm? So no worries, you don't have to be there so early, but don't be too late either. You'll have to go to the Multi Purpose Hall (MPH, as we call it). During registration, you can pay any leftover fees, and make sure documents are stamped and whatnot, before lastly taking your Matric ID photo. Oh, you'll also get your own IUKL t-shirt and briefed about the Induction Week.
What to wear, you ask? This is a private university, so just wear what you think is appropriate :D I wore baju kurung, but you can just wear semi-formally if you're a bit lazy, just to be proper. I look like a public uni student on my first day lol I was so so so nervous and scared and timid, but I'm glad anyways.
After registering, I went to my hostel room for the first time everrr. My room smells like a chalet, hahaha. Anyway, after saying goodbye to my parents, finally, my life as a student starts! Lol. I had to wait a few hours before the next part of the Induction Week commences, so I sat around, text my friends about my well-being, and then got ready to go. Honestly, I was shaking out of nervousness because I've read so much of other universities' orientation week experiences that I'm freaked out... With a bismillah, I stepped out of my hostel room and went on my way.
Alhamdulillah, I made my first friend when I was on my way, where I bravely (haha) asked her if she wanted to go with me to the MPH again for our next activity in the book. She's a year older than me and a really, really nice and understanding person ;;; Too bad she's in a different course so I haven't been talking to her much lately. Anyway.
The first activity was ice-breaking, as usual. You'll be assigned into groups. My group consisted of a few international and local students. I won't say what activity we did exactly, but it's fun for the most part. I suddenly became a little too extroverted because my group was a bit too quiet, but hey, who knew we'd be hella close after? Hehe. Ah, and our group name is 'Silence'. Yeap, go figure. We did a few things here and there in the hall, and I'm so glad that my group members are nice and my facilitators are such warm, friendly people. Ahh kak Nana and Amir, you guys are the best! That's what I thought even now, and during our little presentation that night. We had to do those flags and logos, group cheers and whatnot. Us Malaysians may be used to it but the international students aren't... so it might be weird for them, haha. Dinner and supper were served okay, don't worry. And after everything, we could go back.
We were given a theme and music that night. Our theme is 'zombies', and our song is 'Alone' by Marshmello. Yeap, the song is totally unknown to me, but we have to do a little stage performance on the third night. #okay
Day Two: This is... for some reason, I forgot this day. I'm sorry. ;;;
If my memory serves correctly, you'll be meeting your lecturers of your faculty on this day as well... I'll update this later once I have my hands on the itinerary again, but this is the gist of it. You'll register your first few subjects on this day. I met my Academic Advisor and get to know that I'm not alone in my course for that intake, yayerz.
Also, we had some indoor activities and had to compete with the team next to us. This is really nice because it tests your teamwork, and it's all fun and games. But it really tests your teamwork and this is where I think I'm good at, haha. I'm willing to sacrifice everything just so my team could win. :') We didn't, though.
At this point, many students have dropped out and slept in in their homes and hostels, so it's not as crowded, haha. (But March intake has less students than other intakes, so...).
After some break in the evening, after prayers and dinner, we had another activity. I don't remember what it's called, but it's something that involves tenders and... investors? I get the game, but I just didn't get the point, haha. And we had to build something based on what we had (like straws, cupboards, or papers...), and the worst part of it for me is that we have to go talk to some facilitators because some of them are the investors, and we had to make sure they're interested to 'invest'. Yeah... I know I explained it but I don't get it either... but in the end it's good to have money, right? Not real money though. Just atas angin punya money :')
Uhm... This is kinda embarrassing, but all these pressure from my teammates telling me to "find investors" while they do the work has overwhelmed me so much, that I cried. Yes, I cried in the hall with so many people in it. I guess the thought of talking to many people scares the shit outta me, and rejection hurts. I tried going to three facilitators, but some are not investors and the others rejected me. And yes, I hate rejection. I didn't know why I was mentally screwed for something so small, but I broke down anyways, haha.
I cried in the washroom, but when I came back, I couldn't stop the tears still, so I broke down again. Kak Nana comforted me though, saying that it's okay. A few people were looking and another committee member actually came up to me to comfort me as well. And God, dear God, I'm so grateful they were there. I felt so much better. I felt bad too, though, because I thought my teammates would have thought that I'm weak that for such a small responsibility of "go talk to people", I broke down. ...Well, in the end, we didn't win, but that's okay. One of my teammates actually accompanied me back to the hostel, and after that they all apologized and said that they all felt bad, haha. It's not their fault though, I understand why they were like that. I guess this is why most of my 2nd day's memory was wiped out, haha.
Anyways, on to the third day!
Day Three: It's your last day! And it's a night to remember!
If I'm not mistaken, on the morning of this day, there'll be an official opening ceremony for the new students. So yay, we're finally going to officially meet the ones who's in charge of IUKL as a whole! :) You'll have to dress fomal for this, so suit up. I, again, was fine with my baju kurung, hehe. After all's set and done and lunch and break, change some clothes and let's get explo-racing!
Now then, to the Explorace!
The best thing about Explorace here is that you don't have to run if you don't want to, lol. Just walk all the way. And this is where you'll truly explore the campus and... you'll find out how tiring it is to run to class every morning if you're late, because... well, it takes many steps from the hostel. But it's very good exercise, trust me.
The activities are fun and don't worry, the punishments won't have you eating raw eggs or anything of those dumb things. But I won't tell you what the punishments really are, haha.
Amazingly, we're the first group that finished the race. But no prize for that, so welp. Next, we'll have to plan and prepare for that night. It's something of a talent show? So yeah, we planned our zombie outbreak with Marshmello's song, with a sprinkle of a traditional dance from Vietnam, taught by an international student in our group and she's really nice omg I love her. There's also a theme for what you'll be wearing that night, but since I'm a zombie, I... Well, I wanted to, but couldn't participate for the theme, haha.
Watching everyone that night was truly a blast and I love every second of it. Our performance was great, too. We all did our best so that's that. We all got our food hampers in the end so of course, everything's good, hehe.
All in all, my Induction Week ended wonderfully, albeit not perfectly. Sure, I've actually cried but I guess that's an experience to make me remember. My teammates are all from different courses and only my two facilitators are under the same faculty as me, and I haven't even been meeting them that much too. But despite that, I'm really glad I met them haha god, I know this is cheesy. xD
One thing I'd like to say to you is that: fear not, for this induction week is nothing like your school camp (bcs that's what I was worried about, haha). It's all fun and games and friendliness and happiness all around so don't forget to have fun! All the best and good luck on your new journey~ I actually planned to become one of the facilitators but welp, I'm too busy that I missed the interview deadline. :')
If there's anything else you'd like to ask about IUKL, feel free to voice them up and I'll try my best to answer.
Thank you so much for reading and I hope I could make more useful posts like this based on my experiences haha anyway, see you!! :D
